The Save the Mary River Co-ordinating Group commisioned local artist Jeff Douwes to create a mascot character for the Mary. Meet Wheezer the Wise Lungfish. He's been around for a very long time and is determined to save the Mary River.
Based on discussion in the online forum, the unique Queensland Lungfish was chosen for a mascot, even though it is not yet in as much trouble as the Mary River Turtle and the Mary River Cod. These characters are simply too busy trying to stave off extinction to take part in a public awareness campaign.
