Hey Mrs Westholme,
Why are so many farmers in the area happy that the new dam is going ahead? _________________ If you dont want a new dam join me by not turning any taps on ever!! |

Hey local Hippie,

Good question! Since the number of local farmers in favour of the dam appears to be zero, why could that be?
- "impacted area" farmers are unhappy about their government stealing the land they thought they owned?
- upstream farmers are worried about increased flooding and land use restrictions?
- downstream farmers are worried about reduced water entitlements and increased pollutant concentrations?
Ronnie, m'boy,
You've been asked before...
I know you're bored because the rainy weather has separated the Hyundais from the real 4WD's.
But, unless you have something constructive / important to say, how about you leave us in peace? The good people on this forum actually have better things to do. _________________ "If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything" - anon.

I know that thereare some farmers in the district who are very supportive of the dam proposal - there's one or two over in Kybong that frequently post statements in the Gympie Times and Courier Mail to assert that the dam is proposed in an ideal location, will be of great benefit, etc etc. And everyone is entitled to their own opinion and comment - that's the good thing about a democracy. (And in the spirit of open discussion, might I also add that many of those pro-dam arguments show a lack of understanding of the issues, and lack of knowledge about their own area.)
However, the process being used with regard to Traveston Crossing is not a democratic process, as we have seen. Call it what you want, but the land buy-up has not been voluntary for the majority of landowners - there's a huge percentage of those who sold who had never thought of moving, there was a lot of heavy-handed tacticary and fear-mongering, and so on.
The community consultation process was a lip-service joke, and we have seen how the results of meeting attendances and so on have been skewed to being a POSITIVE outcome in the EIS.
The catchment community panel, in action before the dam proposal was announced and put in place to ensure the health of the Mary and on water provisions for all the communities that rely on her, had their decisions overruled, with the resultant resignation of the committee and denouncement of the process and govt decisionmaking which rode over their recommendations.
The science and hydrology - pfffftttt! Enough has been said and proven elsewhere about this debacle. (It's interesting, though, to hear anecdotally how many 'expert consultants' have now withdrawn their support, citing 'good reputation' is being a greater talisman.).
Local Hippy - debate on the issue is always welcomed - so long as ithe content is supportable. That is the way informed decision-making should happen. This forum is not intended for teasing or inflammatory comment, but rather that its contributors show respect for each other, and engage in active discussion and participation. _________________ "Never doubt that a small group of concerned citizens can change the world.
