Weir overflows after solid falls
Georgina Robinson | January 4, 2008 - 4:10PM
| Quote: | South-East Queensland's newest weir is overflowing after days of rain and wild weather.
The $18.5 million Cedar Grove Weir, on the Logan River south of Brisbane, has the capacity to yield 3,000 million litres (mega litres) of water a year.
It would eventually be connected to the proposed Wyaralong Dam and supply enough water for 150,000 people each day.
The weir is plugged into the South-East Queensland water grid and will supply water to the Beaudesert region by the end of the month.
Acting Premier and Infrastructure Minister Paul Lucas today toured the new weir in the wet weather.
Mr Lucas said he was pleased to see good falls over all of the region's dams, which took combined water storages to 21 per cent today.
"On the Sunshine Coast, Baroon Pocket Dam is overflowing and levels in the Hinze Dam on the Gold Coast rose more than six per cent to 72.32 per cent overnight and are expected to continue to rise," he said.
"There have been good inflows into our existing dams that has seen combined storage go from a low of 19.84 per cent on December 30 to 21.13 per cent today.
"But every one per cent extra in combined dam storage provides around three-and-a-half weeks water supply to South East Queensland," he said.
Mr Lucas also said heavy rain overnight in the Somerset catchment had caused stream rises with the Stanley River at Peachester rising 4.2m above yesterday's level and reaching "minor" flood level. |
