If you've entered the world of Facebook, please encourage your friends to join the Save the Mary Group http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=7060762756
I'm hoping to significantly increase membership over the next few weeks, and am working on keeping the Group page up to date with news and links. |

Hi folks,
Pleased to report that there are now over 1000 Save the Mary campaigners on Facebook!
This means we've got an audience of concerned citizens, some local and the rest from all over the place, to whom we can communicate campaign updates, requests for letter writing, fundraising, lobbying and the like.
I wrote to existing members late last week, and have been (excitedly) watching membership ramp up since then.
| Quote: | Hi there
You're receiving this message because you're one of the 587 members of the Facebook group Save the Mary River.
You've added your name to a cause supported by engineers, scientists, biologists, social workers, conservationists, farmers and other sensible people across the globe. You've joined Mikhail Gorbechev, Senator Bob Brown, the journal Nature, the head of the British EPA and others who say NO to mega dams in general, and to Traveston Crossing Dam in particular.
This week the Deputy Premier reported to State Parliament that the EIS consultation process had resulted in 16,800 separate submissions from the public and meant that the Coordinator General and Federal Government would now investigate further and decide whether the dam could safely proceed (see full article in the Recent News section of the Save the Mary River group).
It is a key time for no dam campaigning, to keep up the momentum and send a loud and clear message to state and federal politicians that this dam is no solution to the water crisis, and promises environmental and social disaster to boot.
Let's Facebook for Mary by doubling the Save the Mary River group membership over the next few weeks. If you invite a friend, and convince them this is something worth fighting for, we'll have 1000 members in no time. It's as easy as sending a virtual Pina Colada, but you might just save 8 threatened species, 1 wetland of international significance, 12% of SEQ's milk production and 900 family homes in the process.
Please, spread the word!
Yours in activism,
Tilly (Admin)

The plan is to message this group weekly, harnessing their energy and getting good messages out there about the campaign. I'd welcome any requests to post particular messages.
And, if you've succumbed to Facebook but aren't yet in the Save the Mary River Group, just go to www.tiny.cc/save
Best,

Hi folks
Facebook-ing for Mary continues, with membership now at 1,182!
I'd welcome ideas about what to profile in the weekly messages, as well as the posting of videos, photos etc.
To get to the group, you need to have a Facebook account, but they take no time to set up and you can be minimalist in using the full social networking capacity of the application. Once logged in, just go to www.tiny.cc/save to get straight to the Save the Mary River group.
Here's the message members received this week.

Hi there
You're receiving this message because you're a member of the Facebook group Save the Mary River.
Welcome especially to new members - signups in the last week have grown the group from 500 to over 1,100. Do keep inviting your friends to join - let's see how big we can make this!
New this week is an online petition to the Federal Minister Peter Garrett. He will soon make a decision about whether the Traveston Crossing Dam can be built, and needs to be reminded of the extent of public opposition. It should be obvious by now, with 246 submissions to the Senate Enquiry and then almost 17, 000 submissions to the Environmental Impact Statement, that the public is saying NO to Traveston Crossing Dam. But, pollies can always do with a little reminding!
The petition focuses on the proposed dam's impact on the Great Sandy Strait, the estuary of the Mary River, stretching between World Heritage Listed Fraser Island and the south-east Queensland coast. Its beauty and unique ecology attract thousands of visitors annually. Listed under the Ramsar Convention as a Wetland of International Significance, it supports an abundant variety of animal and plant life, much of which is rare, vulnerable or endangered. It is also one of Australia's most important stop-over points for migratory trans-equatorial shorebirds.
Yet all of this is now under threat. In 2006 the Queensland Government announced plans to build a mega dam on the Mary River; a system upon which the Strait depends to sustain its complex ecosystem. As signatory to a number of binding state, national and international legislations, Australia has committed to protecting the Great Sandy Strait to ensure its special ecological values are maintained. Such commitments, however, would be severely compromised if a dam is built on the Mary.

In the world of Facebook, we've just established the Save the Mary River Page because the Save the Mary River Group has grown so big and so fast! With now over 1,200 members, it makes communicating with group members impossible.
By becoming a fan of the Page, Save the Mary supporters can add their name to the fight, be kept up-to-date, share photos and other resources, and talk with each other about the cause.
I hope you'll check out the new Page and become a Fan at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Save-the-Mary-River/9768953481
