Hi Folks
I have heard rumours QWI has bought Garapine.
Is that true? Does anybody know anything about it?
If it is true. That's another dagger in the heart of the local economy. |

| Yep, we have sold to QWI. We had hoped to keep the top half of the hill but once we saw the construction details in the EIS we realised there was no way we could operate with the noise. We are continuing to work with QWI to try and keep the camp operating during construction by accommodating the schools offsite and coming back here during the day. If anyone has any suggestions as to accommodation options it would be greatly appreciated. At this stage we are advising schools that our last camp will be December this year. On another note if anyone has a job for two slightly used camp operators let us know. |

I am so sad to hear of the closure of Garapine. Many times I've enjoyed coming there with school groups. A great place - thank you for having provided this facility.
Out of curiosity, besides the '2 slightly used camp operators', how many other people's employment will be directly affected by the closure - counting cleaners, cooks, trainers, etc. - And what about local suppliers (foods, catering equipment, etc). And what about those indirectly affected, such as servicepeople (mechanics, electricians, plumbers, other site maintenance people)?
I believe this should be documented against the social impact tally, but also against the constant push of the economic benefits to the local community, if the dam goes ahead. _________________ "Never doubt that a small group of concerned citizens can change the world. | I contacted the Mary Valley BEAR group as I thought this information would have been valuable to them, however they do not consider businesses on the eastern side of the river to be part of the Mary Valley. Go figure that one! Obviously there are many other people affected from our staff to suppliers but more so the more than 70 schools and 7500 kids per year that will now go somewhere else and never experience the Mary Valley. |
