MEDIA RELEASE **
3 December 2008

Don’t Murray the Mary speaking tour

We’ve heard him on the radio, seen him on TV, seen his 4WD decked out with eye catching stickers and perhaps even seen him in his kayak on the road or the water. But next week, the people of the Mary Valley and Fraser Coast will have the first opportunity yet to hear first hand from the Marathon Kayaker, Steve Posselt about his 5000km protest trek along Australia’s rivers.

A water engineer with 37 years experience, Steve Posselt paddled and walked his kayak down the entire length of the Murray-Darling system in 2007. However what he is best known for in the Mary Valley are his efforts to save the Mary River from the proposed Traveston Crossing dam.

“When I heard about the proposed Traveston Crossing dam, all my years of experience in the water industry told me that this was a dumb idea. I had to do something,” explained Steve.

Steve will offer his first hand account of his Murray Darling journey as well as his two journeys to save the Mary River. These include his most recent 1000km kayak to hand deliver 3000 protest letters direct to Minister Peter Garrett and his previous, awareness raising kayak of the Brisbane and Mary Rivers.

“What all this time on Australia’s rivers has taught me is that we treat our rivers like drains. We have to get smarter and make better decisions for our rivers if we are serious about sustaining our communities,” urges Steve. “My message is that better alternatives are there, we just need to wise up and do what’s right.”

Steve’s speaking tour coincides with the Mary Valley Release of the new book, Love, Mary. Admission is $10 with kids free and all adult entries receive a free copy of Love, Mary.
