THE Liberal National Party has raised the spectre of electoral fraud in the seat of Chatsworth, claiming an extraordinary number of absentee voters were backing Labor.
LNP state director Michael O'Dwyer yesterday wrote to Electoral Commissioner David Kerslake demanding absentee votes counted yesterday be separated and checks be made to ensure they were lawful.
The LNP claimed yesterday that Labor had scored 62 per cent of the absentee vote in Chatsworth, well above what the party received in other seats, including Everton, Coomera and Pumicestone.
The absentee trend could lead to Labor retaining the seat, one of four close contests the LNP was hoping to win.
On Wednesday, Mr Kerslake shifted counting in Chatsworth to the Electoral Commission of Queensland's offices in the city.
In his letter to the commissioner, Mr O'Dwyer said he had "grave concerns" about aspects of the vote.
"Specifically, the absentee vote tally is, in contradiction to that in most other electorates, wholly out of line with other votes cast on the day," he said.
Mr O'Dwyer urged Mr Kerslake to ensure there was proper security over the new counting location and investigate the irregularity surrounding the absentee voting pattern.
Mr Kerslake confirmed he had received correspondence in relation to Chatsworth.
"I have prepared a response," he said. "The counting in this electorate is continuing."
Late yesterday, the LNP's Andrea Caltabiano remained 41 votes behind Labor's Steven Kilburn.
In other seats, Labor's Phil Gray was expected to concede to the LNP's Alex Douglas in Gaven, while the votes in Redlands and Cleveland still remained close.
Police found there was insufficient evidence to pursue Family First candidate Stephen Christian's claims that he was the victim of an election day slap attack by Labor's Karen Struthers.
Ms Struthers, sworn in yesterday as a minister in the Bligh Government's Cabinet, was accused of attempting to slap Mr Christian in the head but succeeded only in hitting his shoulder.
"The complainant has also been informed of his rights to pursue his complaint through civil action if he so desires," police said.
Mr Christian said he was "very disappointed" and was considering civil action. |

| It seems the ALP "strong finish" is happening in Redlands too. After trailing the LNP vote for days, the Labor candidate has just edged ahead... I think currently by 11 votes. |

Ah, but maybe not quite often enough Darren.
Redlands teetered back to the LNP and has been declared. An LNP victory by just 34 votes.
Chatsworth clawed back a bit but still went to Labor by just 74 votes.
