I always forward emails about The Mary River on to my contacts. Today I received this reply -

Quote:
Thats commendable Joan but I (and others) are a little confused....I still hear that most of the landholders have sold their peoperties (and rented them back) what IS the truth? I care very much about that beautiful river and nature as a whole but if they have sold out why are we still fighting.....

I had sent an invitation to the Board The Bullet For Mary event.

Isn't it frustrating that people aren't getting the whole message. The stories that grab them are the ones such as the filthy rich ex-landholders of the Mary Valley who are saying the dam will make things better.

I did reply in a rather long email to my friend with quotes and references to relevant web sites discussing ALL the issues - not just the issue of the land taken illegally from people who had no choice in the circumstances but who are still fighting for the river.

It is frustrating, but the fight is much much bigger than the people of the valley,is about our fight to save a river and it's ecosystem. It realy is an issue for the whole of Australia.
That is why we must fight on and stop this dam which will lead to a death of a river system and all that depend on it, humans and animals alike.
Tell your friends to read the book "When the Rivers run dry" by Fred Pearce.
We have destroyed so much in Australia but in the 21st Cent. we should consider very careful before going down the 1950's path of dam building.
This the Government is not doing. Our Urban society, and we are the most urban society on earth, is realy very ignorant about how the natural world works .

Yes - I read "When the Rivers run dry" by Fred Pearce some time ago and thought then it should be essential reading for everyone but now I'd say especially Peter Garrett and Anna Bligh and Colin Jensen.

I think the city media seem to be making it appear as only a "Mary Valley Farmers" issue - it's great that they are now writing about the dam and giving it publicity, but they need to show the wider focus.

And of course Anna Bligh likes to make it look like just a few NIMBY farmers having a whinge.
