Can-Do promises to get Coast working

Matt Johnston, Maroochy Journal

LNP leader Campbell Newman has earmarked construction and tourism as the two main industries to bring jobs to the Sunshine Coast and vowed to give the region the attention it deserves at state level.

Speaking exclusively to the Journal in Buderim last week, Mr Newman said the revival of the construction and tourism industries was the key to future job creation in the region.

"I've been very clear that the sustainable planning act needs to be re-written to get good, sensible development going. We need to re-write the local government act so that your council can act swiftly and we need to ensure the regional plan supports the go forward of the Coast," he said.

"In terms of tourism, people are interested overseas but we are not aggressively and energetically promoting the Coast. If you go to China, India and the Gulf there are markets that have not been getting the attention they deserve.

"One city of Chongqing in central western China has 30 million people, that's 1.5 times the size of Australia. We shouldn't neglect our traditional markets of Europe and Japan, but there are huge opportunities that haven't been exploited."

He said the Bligh government's current financial commitment to the tourism industry was not enough and the state needed to be proactive in promoting its destinations internationally.

In the wake of Bob Katter's recent announcement that his Australia Party would target the Coast at state level, Mr Newman urged voters to consider the ramifications of voting for an independent or minor party.

"If people vote for independents or minor parties they will simply re-elect Anna Bligh. Independents and minor parties at the moment are taking Australia back in a very concerning manner and that is what will happen at state level," he said.

He said a change of government would ensure the region received an infrastructure and economic boost.

"I think of the Coast in terms of what people need to do for the poor old struggling communities of the Sunshine Coast that are being neglected by the current Labor government," he said.

"We need to invest in public transport, roads and this hospital to get the economy of the Sunshine Coast going."

When quizzed on his party's commitment to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital, Mr Newman said it would be delivered with the same amount of beds in a shorter time frame.

He also shot down speculation that the LNP would revisit the Traveston Crossing Dam.

"We have never supported the Traveston Dam. We don't support it now and if I become premier of this state we will be selling the land back as a first option to the people that originally owned it. We will be selling the land that was acquired for the dam site," he said.
