Bikes to cure traffic

A BIKEWAY linking Cairns to Coolangatta would get the nod ahead of road construction under a transport plan launched by The Greens yesterday.
Funding for the bikeway, as well as walkways and public transport, would be increased at the expense of roads under the plan.

The environmentalist party announced the policy with a phalanx of bike riders in Milton, in Brisbane's inner west, to highlight their "innovative solutions" to Queensland's transport woes.

Greens spokeswoman and candidate for Mt Coot-tha Juanita Wheeler said the Greens policy integrated into their philosophy that transport should improve community life without negative environmental, social, health and economic impacts.

"We can only achieve this goal via a mix of integrated government policies that improve public transport services and cycling and pedestrian infrastructure," she said.

"Building a coastal bikeway in Queensland would not only deliver transport outcomes by connecting coastal communities, it would also deliver health benefits, and create a world class eco-tourism attraction to boost local economies."

She denied cutting funding to roads would lead to increased congestion, saying a bus was equal to 60 single-occupant cars.

I think more people riding bikes would be wonderful and obviously reduce greenhouse emissions.
But would the construction itself of a new roadway for bikes not add to global warming? When you consider how environmentally destructive making cement is. Then would not the bike road surface reflect heat and perpetually increase the temperature?
Surely we should leave the grass there - that would be more green Smile
Especially if it ever rains.

Bicycle! Bicycle!
I want to ride my bicycle
I want to ride my bike.
I want to ride my bicycle
I want to ride it where I like

************************************************

A-round, round, wheels goin' round round round.
Down up pedals, down up down.
But I gotta get across to the other side of town,
Before the sun goes down. Hey, hey!

Now we're riding along on the bicycle, honey.
That's a bicycle built for two.
A-lookin' at my honey in the rearview mirror;
Now I got a better view.

You looked so pretty as you were ridin' along.
You looked so pretty as you were singing this song.
Sing a song!

A-round, round, wheels goin' round round round.
Down up pedals, down up down.
But I gotta get across to the other side of town,
Before the sun goes down. Hey, hey!

Westholme you never cease to amaze me.
Sometimes you flash with firey rage.
Other times you are profound or wise.
Then again at other times you just...
well you are just.... Shocked
