Health, water key Coast issues

31.08.2006
By TOBY WALKER
HEALTH and water remain the big issues for candidates contesting the seat of Glass House along with improving transport infrastructure to cater for future growth in the hinterland.

Incumbent Carolyn Male said the Beattie government had recruited an extra 311 doctors, an extra 1358 nurses and an extra 546 allied health staff.

Ms Male said plans for a water pipeline grid, rebate scheme for water-saving devices, using recycled water for industry, two large dams, and a desalination plant showed the Beattie ピgovernment had taken the issue of water seriously.

Nationals。ヲ candidate Ken Piva believed excavating ピexisting shallow dams like those at Somerset and ピWivenhoe to make them deeper was a better alternative to flooding farms and said he was opposed to the 。ァtalk。ィ of another new dam considered for Conondale.

Mr Piva felt the problems at Caboolture Hospital could be helped by ridding its roster of 。ァGeorge Street。ィ doctors and a top-heavy bureaucracy, replacing it with more doctors and nurses.
Greens candidate Roger Callen agreed more needed to be done to take some of the pressure off staff at the Caboolture Hospital.

But he felt expanding the Maleny Medical Centre and planning for one at Beerwah needed to be considered.

Family First candidate Justin Blowes believed building dams in places with declining rainfall like southern Queensland was 。ァthe definition of insanity。ィ and supported his party。ヲs idea of assessing a water pipeline for the Burdekin area.

He said voters were fed up with the Beattie government。ヲs crisis-driven approach to management as demonstrated at the Caboolture Hospital.

。ァI feel that services are not being managed properly,。ィ he said.

Can anybody elaborate on this???? Is there "talk" of another new dam being considered for Conondale??????

Yes I believe so. It was first discussed back in 1990/1 by Beattie in discussions with Maroochy shire council. Herman Scwabbe made some comments that show, as time has come to pass that the Sunshine Coasts efforts on water sustainability have been for nought!

Caboolture? I live there and really you would'nt know there was an elsction on!. Half a dozen signs scattered about and bugger all in the local rags.

I posted this reply (to an email I sent) from Carolyn Male a couple of months back:

Quote:
Thank you for the email regarding the Traveston dam site.

A large number of people in my electorate have spoken to me about the issue of water and dams.

Their first priority has always been for me to represent their views that a dam at Cambroon or Obi Obi would not be acceptable to them.

I have faithfully represented these views since my preselection in 1999, and these two sites have been ruled out by the Premier and the Minister for Natural Resources, Water and Mines.

The other issue they raise with me is in relation to provision of subsidies for rainwater tanks and other water-saving devices.

The Premier has announced that funding has been granted by this government for subsidies for rainwater tanks, grey water systems, retrofitting of taps, dual flush toilets, rebates on water saving appliances and funding to Councils to repair leaks throughout their pipe systems.

My constituents have told me regularly that they require a reliable supply of water for urban and non-urban purposes. The Traveston dam when built and linked to a water grid will ensure that supply.

Whilst I appreciate the difficulty this imposes on the people whose land will be resumed for the Traveston Dam, I feel it is a necessary requirement to ensure water supply for existing residents of South East Queensland and also for the expected increase of 1 million people moving to the area in the next 20-30 years.

Thank you for taking the time to acquaint me of your views.

Kind regards
Carolyn Male

Ms Carolyn Male MP
State Member for Glasshouse

I would never really wish a dam upon anyone else, Sad but wouldn't it be interesting to hear some of these very obedient ALP pollies' reactions if it was happening in their own backyards? Twisted Evil

Sonycat,
I don't know why the big parties with their big advertising budgets are keeping quiet in Caboolture. (If I had to guess, though, I'd say the ALP's silence is because they haven't realised you are still alive after their best efforts to the contrary - they took away your emergency ward and then tried to cover up the effects of the Narangba chemical fire).
The STMR group have a budget about 1000 times smaller, but they have tried to spend it wisely to communicate with all Queenslanders. Check out your Caboolture Shire Herald tomorrow. Wink
