We will be ringing all in our street tonight and urging them to attend. What not all do this?

THE RALLY IS STILL ON! JUST THE VENUE AND THE DAY HAVE CHANGED

Dear Dambusters,

As you might have heard, we have had a lot of trouble trying to organise a suitable venue in Brisbane - all the best locations are ripped up for the inner city busway project (eg. Roma Street Parklands, City Square) and Southbank is not available on either Saturday 2 September or Sunday 3 September because of the River Festival (Riverfire is on the Saturday Night). Our main objective was to get media coverage into Brisbane. But a great alternative has emerged which will serve our purpose equally well and which will mean we won't have to travel to Brisbane. And, it is focussed specifically on our cause - saving the Mary River. The Sunshine Coast Environment Council is organising a big gig in support of the Mary River in Noosa on Saturday 2 September at the Noosa Riverstage, Gympie Terrace, Noosaville, from 11am to 1 pm..

Because of Cate's Molloy's high profile stance - there will be big media coverage across the Sunshine Coast and into Brisbane. The event is also being staged to Launch the Save the Mary River CD. I think if we throw our weight behind this function, it would achieve pretty much the same outcome we were hoping to achieve by marching in Brisbane. It will also be a fun day in a great location rather than the dreary back blocks of Brisbane. It would also be great to support Cate, even though we are not in her electorate. She is the only ALP politician who had the guts to stand up for us - it would be nice to return the favour and, at the same time, achieve the same outcome as the Brisbane Rally. It promises to be a great celebration of people's commitment to the river.

Why did you say there was no protest in Brisbane this weekend? I didnt know it was on until after I saw it on the news. People could have gone if youd told them about it. There were environmentalists from the Mary River at the protest. This is ridiculous.

save_lungfish - the organisers asked for details of this protest not to be put on the website because of previous problems with gaining access to public facilities in Brisbane for the original rally. They wanted this protest to come as a surprise without the possibility that it might be stopped, and relied on word of mouth and the network established at the previous flotilla protest (on the Mary). This website and forum are regularly read by government officials.

Hi Paul,

I think it must have been a last minute idea? I only received confirmed information about the canoeing in Brisbane late on Friday. It was too late for me by then to be able to go. After the change of date and venue for the orignal rally in Brisbane, I had organised my work commitments. Sad It was a wasted important opportunity for both the events to REALLY send the message home to PB and to the voters, by way of mass revolt. Unfortunately, I think it was a time restraint issue?, and THANKS should go to those that organised the events and also to those that were able to particpate with their attendance. Very Happy

Elaine and Bronwyn

Thanks for your input. I understand now why it was quiet although it looked like the police knew and assisted the flotilla. I imagine a lot of Brisbanites were out there today and saw the protest. It looked great on the news. I think there is support amongst informed people everywhere. Although youll never convince people who think dams are the only solution or who dont give a hoot about anything more than watering their gardens or concrete. I do think there is a good base of environmentally aware people in the cities you can continue to work teach about these disasters after the election.
