Beattie to join churches in rain prayer
October 27, 2006
QUEENSLAND Premier Peter Beattie will join with the state's church leaders to pray for rain next week.
Mr Beattie and Queensland's leading clergy will launch a week of prayer for rain at a service at St John's Anglican Cathedral in Brisbane on Thursday.
Prayer services using the theme, Water: A Time for Prayer, are planned across the state for the week starting November 5.
In a letter to Christian communities across the state, church leaders said the drought had reached crisis point.
"While such conditions have been causing hardship for many years now and while we have prayed with and for Queenslanders suffering the consequences of water shortage, circumstances have reached a new crisis point,'' the letter said.
The letter, signed by the heads of 10 Christian churches, said water reserves were so low in most of the state that Mr Beattie had asked them to urge all churches to pray for rain.
The signatories also said people and governments needed to conserve water and care for the environment. |
