TWO historic homesteads have been saved from flooding under changes to the State Government's proposed Wyaralong Dam, near Beaudesert.
Locals and history buffs had feared the sites of the Wyaralong and Overflow homesteads would be beneath the dam's water line and both would have to be removed from their original positions.
Deputy Premier Anna Bligh yesterday confirmed both homesteads would be saved, however the dam would probably impact on the surrounding property. "These are iconic homes that are an important feature of the local community's history and landscape and I'm pleased they will be preserved."
Locals affected by the dam will this week receive letters and individualised maps detailing the impact on their properties.
Only 18 properties will have to be resumed or partly resumed for the dam and subsequent road changes, as much of the area needed is already owned by the State Government.
Ms Bligh said the 1230ha dam would hold 103,000 megalitres of water and would yield about 21,000 megalitres a year.
"Apart from helping shore up the southeast's water supplies, the dam will also have a number of other benefits, including creating more than 300 jobs during construction and provide possible water allocations for use by local rural industry," she said. _________________ CESARE LOMBROSO "The ignorant man always adores what he cannot understand" |
