Hi All. We were recently in Victoria and stopped for a look at the Hume Wier. It is at record low levels (don't know the percentage). It looks horrible. This is what the Gold Coast would like the Mary Valley to look like so that they don't have to look after tanks or recycle water.

Picture taken 24/11/6 by the writer. This image is available for use by anyone wanting to stop the damming of the Mary River. If you want the dam, take your own photos.

Thanks ( I think ) for that Luke,
I say think, because it uncannily looks like our valley only minus the life............Shockingly graphic portrait of a land wasted, submerged, degraded, devoid of anything resembling a valley of life. This CANNOT happen to the MARY VALLEY EVER!!!! |

This is an image of the Hume Weir on the Murray just included in a Save the Mary poster entitled "Save the Mary from Becoming the Murray"

I don't know whether to be pleased that my idea is already in the works or be disappointed that my photo wont be used. Great picture Darren. That looks much more like a barren waste land than mine. _________________ Would it be out of the question for you to just listen Beattie. |

That is a great photo Lukerevolution. Sad, but good. Makes me sad, as it does for Bronwyn, to think of our valley looking like that one day. Therefore, this dam must be stopped. There's no other option. _________________ CESARE LOMBROSO "The ignorant man always adores what he cannot understand" |

Luke,
your photo is too good to be wasted - it'll get used somewhere.
Be pleased not disappointed. _________________ "If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything" - anon.

I'm not disapointed at all. I'm just pleased to part of the solution. This time I was one step behind. Next time I might come up with an aspect that hasn't been thought of yet.
I've put all of the Hume Weir photos that I have up at:

What a waste land!!! Because the dam is so low they are allowing grazing on the flood plains. This would be good for short term fattening but not for long term dairy farming (currently a major activity). This means that the land will make money not communities.
The idea of the Mary Valley being remade as the Gold Coast's water wasteland is disheartening.
If you are interested in any of the photos for a "No Dam" related publication/poster please email me and I'll put if up for you full size.

The one that appeals to me as a wasteland shot is 7314.jpg.

When I was a little girl we used to go for drives to the Hume Weir - it's unrecognisable to me now. How terrible. This drought is so wide spread isn't it. I wonder why Beattie thinks a dam will fix it? Our friend from Tassie says they are on water restrictions down there. Can't imagine Tasmania being dry. I lived in south west Victoria until I was 12, I never realised drought could come to the south of Australia. I suppose Gympie people never thought it would stop raining here either. _________________ When injustice becomes law, resistance becomes obligation" - Steve Biko |

Here's the fullsize image westholme. Thanks for your interest. That's the one with the dragon fly in it out of focus in the foreground.

Why is the Gold Coast under fire here? I thought the current mayor, Ron Clark, actually had his act together. It is the Gold Coast City Council, now with other players, that has gone ahead with the Tugun desalination plant. Appears big fat Russ may have left one OK legacy too for the Gold Coast, and no idea how it was done, but on history it would not have been straight and must have been a land deal of some sorts. But it appears he actually put the Hinze dam in the right place. Clark is also behind Couran Cove on South Stradbroke. If anyone wants to see real conservation, recycling, pest control all designed to make really pleasant human living area too, in action and working, I suggest they visit there and have a good look around to see what can be done if you want it to be done. 5 star living in almost perfect harmony with the surrounds.
Clark seems rather A-political and does not appear to be into grandstanding., Having been to Couran Cove a few times, and obtaining plans and advice that were freely given to try show some of the methods used to local council equivalent here. 0.01% success, but the seed is planted. I have to sing the praises for what I observed by Clark.
I gleaned he was doing his best to pass these principals onto the city he is charged to run, but of course politics enter councils and try and sabotage just because if someone is in opposition they just must oppose. Good or bad, they don't think, just say the opposite as that is what opposition does best. Turn everything even remotely good 180 degrees, stuff the real issues and trying to work together. Just oppose.
The problem I see is the drop kicks in Brisbane who think they own the entire State, Milk makes itself in cartons, vegetables and meat manifest overnight in the supermarket and water just comes out of the tap. No idea how it all works, probably don't care, it just does, as they live in the big city. Dams are to play on, right? And those bastard trees, they just get in the way of Pacific Glimpses of Paradise Estate, only 20 minutes from CBD (in a helicopter) or at 160 kph At Monday morning at 3am. Or another rant. The dream 5 hectare land, commute to the city. Then ring up and complain because your cows are moo-ing at 5am, must have two big dogs, who of course do not roam in packs at night and would never cruelly pull down 19 poddy calves in one hit and kill them just for fun, as "our dogs don't wander" Grrr. Need and rant section here.
I am happy to be corrected on the above points if I am off the mark _________________ The citizen can bring our political and governmental institutions back to life, make them responsive and accountable, and keep them honest. No one else can. – John Gardiner |
