Boswell Media Release 26 Feb 07

SENATE AGREES TO TRAVESTON DAM INQUIRY

The Senate today agreed to establish an Inquiry in to the proposed dam at Traveston Crossing in Queensland's Mary Valley.

Nationals Leader in the Senate, Senator Ron Boswell, today moved a motion on behalf of himself, Senator Barnaby Joyce and Senator Russell Trood referring the matter to the Senate's standing committee on Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport.

"This is a broad-ranging inquiry which has been requested by the people of the Mary Valley and Sunshine Coast regions who feel their concerns have not been properly addressed by the Beattie Government.

"While this inquiry does not have the power to stop the dam, it is an important forum for getting the facts on the table.

"The issues raised in the independent experts' report commissioned by the Mary Valley Council of Mayors deserve a proper hearing.

"A number of cheaper water supply alternatives that do not involved long term restrictions have been put to me such as raising Borumba Dam, seawater desalination, stormwater harvesting, and water smart development in new subdivisions," Senator Boswell said.

The Senate has decided to look at "the merits of all options" for water supply for South East Queensland.

The inquiry will examine the social, environmental, economic and engineering impacts of the various water supply options.

The inquiry will be established over the next month.

The above link is to the thread Federal Parliament Hansard. I have pasted the bit about the Senate Inquiry as well as the petition excerpt where Bartlett has submitted the petition he was running. Over 1700 names on that petition, nice one.

Mayor confident no future for Traveston dam

The Mayor of the Cooloola Shire Council, Mick Vernados, says he is optimistic the Federal Government will scrap the Traveston Crossing dam proposal on environmental grounds.

Nationals' Senate leader Ron Boswell says he doubts the federal Environment Minister will reject the project, in south-east Queensland, but says he may put conditions on it to ensure the survival of endangered species such as the lungfish.

Councillor Vernados says he remains adamant that a Senate inquiry will provide irrefutable evidence that the project should not proceed.

"I believe that reasonable people would say that if there are other more viable alternatives that are not going to cost as much per kilolitre of water and it's not going to damage the environment or threaten the environment and there not going to have the social disruption to people's lives, then I think that reasonable people will say, 'hang on, I think there is a just cause here not to proceed with the dam'," he said.

Laughing Pardon my cynicism, but i put the proposition that senators who initiate a senate inquiry , and make these types of media statements (unless they misquoted him) lack a cerain credibilty ,

" i'd like to move a personal motion Mr president that the senate institute an immediate enquiry into what a load of crap the traveston dam proposal is , even though my honorable party colleauge, the federal Minister will more than likely approve the proposal with conditions, i wont have it said that i sat back and fiddled while traveston and the mary valley burned , and i ask mt esteemed party colleauge senator joice to second the motion " , all in favor ?, carried.
Let it be recorded publicly that the national party senators for qld are totally opposed to the traveston proposal and have done everything within their powers to investigate the farce.
Cheers crusty bin cynic

Laughing Well said brother Darren, i bestow upon you an honorary membership of the "Cynicus Damus Nullius" , a society based on the principles of democratic freedom of speech and humour, we carry on the proud tradition of public comment on the phallicy (BLINDNESS) of the political oligarchy.

The society was formed by the greek philosopher Diogenes , whom plato and the status quo reffered to as " the cynics" , a greek word meaning 'dogs', it is true that some members tend to follow the lunar phases and carry out certain vocalisations on clear cloudless nights.

However all members have the uncanny (canine) ability to detect the odour of 'outhouse rats lurking on the political hustings' , muttering 'dam shallow' words of consolation and commiseration to their constituents.

Remember our war cry, "[i]DAMUS NULLIUS TURNBULLUS OR WE VOTUS OUTUS YOUR ENCUMBENTS"
