The Queensland Liberal National Party says it is disappointed conservation groups have rated the party as the worst environmental performer in a pre-election scorecard.
Sixteen environmental groups yesterday released a report card gauging how ALP, the LNP and The Greens fared on 13 key issues associated with climate change, water, nature and building sustainable communities.
The Greens were named the best environmental performers, with an overall rating of 80.5 per cent, while the ALP scored 50.5 per cent and the LNP 24 per cent.
LNP environment spokesman David Gibson questioned why conservation groups had rated the LNP below Labor, which had committed to building the Traveston Crossing Dam on the Mary River.
Mr Gibson said the project would be "one of the most environmentally damaging dams in Queensland's history".
"We have seen the backroom deals between Labor and The Greens on preferences which would see the Traveston Crossing Dam built should Ronan Lee be elected to Parliament and now we have green lobby groups actively supporting Labor and Greens today even when they have said they will destroy the Mary River," Mr Gibson said.
The LNP has vowed to scrap the Traveston Dam if it wins office, whereas the ALP maintains the project is crucial to South-East Queensland's future water security. The Greens will recommend voters allocate their second preferences to Labor candidates in 14 seats at Saturday's election, but the preference deal does not apply to any electorates in the Mary River area.
Groups including Queensland Conservation, the Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF), the Wilderness Society, World Wildlife Fund and Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland prepared the pre-election scorecard.
The LNP received one tick on the scorecard for opposing Traveston, but conservationists slammed its support for uranium mining and its promise to let recreational fishers drop a line into Moreton Bay green zones while a review was undertaken.
"If this was a school report card what we would be seeing is the Greens with a high distinction, Labor with a pass and the LNP with a bad fail," ACF executive director Don Henry said.
"It's particularly concerning one of the major parties in this election is going in with such a poor suite of environment policies."
