***MEDIA RELEASE September 11th, 2009***

“The movie "The Burning Season" inspires conserving our Biodiversity

With September being Biodiversity Month in Australia, an important film promoting the importance of protecting, conserving and improving biodiversity both within Australia and across the world is being shown at the Nambour Arthouse Cinema.

The Burning Season is the story of a remarkable achievement by one young man not afraid to single-handedly confront the biggest challenge of our time. Dorjee Sun wants to establish a cutting edge carbon trading scheme to protect rainforests in Indonesia, saving the orangutan from extinction and making a real impact on climate change.

The proposed Traveston Dam, and associated pipelines like the Northern Pipeline Interconnector stage 2, would also produce major greenhouse gas emissions and threaten biodiversity in the Mary Valley, the Mary River and the Great Sandy Strait. Unique species occur in the Mary River including the lungfish, the Mary River Cod and the Mary River Turtle. The Mary River Turtle is among the world’s 25 most endangered turtles and turtle researcher Marilyn Connell says ‘these turtles have been breeding in the Mary River since time immemorial, but if the river stops flowing, their survival is at great risk.'

The Save the Mary River Coordinating Group continues to campaign to stop the proposed dam and to protect this unique river and the communities that live in the Mary Valley.

The Save the Mary River Coordinating Group invite you to come to this fundraising event and watch one story about protecting a unique species and its ecosystem. This fundraiser is a way for people to become inspired about a future that protects the environment, to learn about the campaign, to become a member of the group and to help with the campaign.

Doors open at 6pm on opening night, 25th September 2009 at the Nambour Arthouse Cinema, Currie St., Nambour with some snacks provided and drinks will be available for purchase at the bar. The movie will begin at 6:45pm Tickets are $15 and proceeds will be donated to the Save the Mary River campaign.
