How does this community even start to rebuild?
I think that it will be as long a road as the last 3 and a half years, albeit a lot more satisfying and a Hell of a lot less terrifying.
It is the night of the 'No Dam day' (11th of the 11th), and it is 11pm (coincidentally), and I can't sleep. I am making more resolutions as aI lie in bed in the dark than I have ever made on any New Years eve in my life. That's why I got up and found myself at the computer.
It is like de ja vu for me. Once there was another government announcement that had me in this same state. Except it was Beattie's announcement of a dam on the Mary. Now I am up late, unable to sleep, but for a totally different reason. A better, less traumatic reason.
Tonight I have heard the best news I could ever want to hear right now and it feels like the first night of the rest of my life.
It is also, the first night since April 26 2006 that I have been able to go to bed with No TC Dam to wake up to.
But what's bothering me and why am I back at the computer late at night??
I want to push the QLD Government to continue with it's apparent resolve to 'save the endangered species' by building a conservation centre.
I strongly beleive that this Research and conservation facility should go ahead. If it was that important to them while they were pushing the dam, then it, theoretically, should be just as important to them now.
The research facility should be built. They have the land and what is a measly $10mill when they can waste so much over 3 and a 1/2 years on glossy propaganda brochures. Hell, I got a glossy leaflet in the mail last week from the Gov spruiking it's decision to sell off State assets.
I will be writing them a letter asking for this very thing.
I will also be writing Peter Garrett a letter. A letter of gratitude. This is the real reason I found myself at the computer, but now I am here, I cannot think straight.
So how do we rebuild a community that's very fabric has been torn asunder? I am sure that there will be meetings and discussions and resultant actions.
I wish everyone luck in the rebuilding efforts. This is a new fight. It is the fight to bring us back to life..
I have two quotes rolling around in my head tonight. Even as I tried to sleep they kept bothering me.
One quote is for us and our rebuilding efforts.
"once more into the great unknown"
The other quote is stuck in my head after seeing a seething Bligh during her press release wanting to reign down her wrath upon the heads of the Sunshine Coast and Wide bay..
"cry Havoc, and let slip the dogs of war." I hope she does not. _________________ CESARE LOMBROSO "The ignorant man always adores what he cannot understand" |

Just before the "Annoucement" i was thinking that this whole mad proposal gave me a real purpose. And everybody joined together with that same purpose. And now we have achieved our goal and its great.
I do have a few 'next steps' planned that I would like to share and get help with. (Its so good to think of them without that mad dam in the background.)
I'm back in Oz for 2 months over Xmas and will be launching the Bronze Silky Project on Australia Day 2010. It will involve making a mold, wax copies, casting bronze. welding the jigsaw together, finnishing and colouring. A lifesize copy of the Australiana wood sculture "Silky" which is currently at the Info center celebrating with everyone there.
A big job. The first stage, the plaster mold, will require that the carving be sealed. Then plaster carefully applied. It would be great to get physical help and invite everyone to stay in touch with the progress and help out where they want. It will all be happening at the info centre. I hope to have the launch there as well.
I'll need help with lots of stuff associated with this goal, I would like to eventually have this bronze monument placed somewhere like the new Mary River Environmental Awareness Center . Anyway it wont happen overnight, but it will happen. I will be making available smaller copies of silky as a way to finance the material costs forcast. I would like to get a network happening of interested folk to keep the project stimulated.
Anyway thats the plan. My details in the life after traveston are as follows;
E-mail; silkysculpture@yahoo.com
Facebook; Keith Gall

Good luck in your new life everyone. _________________ "MARY RIVER FOREVER" |

And, as I mentioned in a thread in the Media Watch section (but as this is the NEXT STEPS thread, thought I better bring it over here)...I want Mary River Xmas cards to send to all the pollies that supported this outcome.
Sadly there is no QLD Labor pollies that will be getting one. Maybe if they had of shown some b#%^s and stood up to this woman they might be reaping the benefits right now.
I know a few I will be sending a card to.
Garrett, Barnaby, Somylay, Gibson, yes, and Brown, Abbott, Simpson, Natoli, Molloy, the Mayors of the original council of Mayors' (including Vernados if I can find an address)...the list goes on and on I think...I will not be sending one to anyone on the current Gympie Council, as many well known and VERY high up members of council have said positive things about the dam, supporting the dam, (working towards a future with the dam before it was even approved), when they didn't know who they were talking to. They thought I was just an average joe with no involvement in the anti dam issue. Least I got to see their true colours.
So, yeah, that is another resolution I made yesterday. Xmas cards for everyone.
It would be great if the STMRCG could issue a list of all the known pollies and scientists that put their neck on the line to come out in the media and condemn the dam.
I could never afford to send a Xmas card to EVERYONE that I believe influenced this decision, but I would like to thank those in high places who stood up for us, while the QLD Labor Government and many media outlets tried to break us down. _________________ CESARE LOMBROSO "The ignorant man always adores what he cannot understand" |
