Review of EPBC Act published

Independent review of the EPBC Act has handed down its final report on the EPBC Act. The major recommendation is that the Act should be significantly revised and re-drafted as a new Act - "The Australian Environmental Act".
Obvious opportunities for change for the better here - but also obvious risks that decision-making under the new act will be 'streamlined' in such a way that State vs Federal government conflicts in environmental law (like the Traveston Crossing Dam and Paradise Dam cases) don't slow down major State projects in the future. When state-based environmental assessment is corrupted as it can be from time to time (eg Tasmania and Qld particularly) - this could remove an important layer of independent scrutiny.
