Here is a report we should be looking out for - it should be finished by now. This is the scoping study for the state-wide water grid. It will be interesting to see how they intend to inter-connect the areas north of the Mary catchment to the SEQ water grid without the Traveston Crossing Dam link.

http://www.dip.qld.gov.au/resources/publication/progress-reports/state-water-grid-concept-plan-aug-2009.pdf

Here is the text from the August progress report.

Statewide Water Policy
Quarterly Project Progress Report
August 2009
Project: State Water Grid – concept plan

Proponent: Department of Infrastructure and Planning and Department of
Environment and Resource Management (DERM).
Key stakeholders: Future users of the water, state agencies, water service providers
and local governments
Location:
The State Water Grid would cover that part of Queensland where
interconnection/backup of regional water supplies is considered
necessary and is feasible.
Project parameters:
The State Water Grid Concept Plan will identify options to link
regional water systems to provide a higher level of water security
against prolonged sequences of drought years.
Project scope
The Statewide Water Policy articulated a plan to develop a statewide water grid, which would complement
the South East Queensland Water Grid and improve water supplies in regional and rural Queensland.
Stage 1 focussed on investigating the feasibility of a direct pipeline connection from the Burdekin Falls Dam
to the South East Queensland Water Grid.
The focus of stage 2 is to develop a concept plan to assess options to provide long-term water security to
meet essential urban, industrial and other water needs in key locations across the state.
Stage 3 (if proceeded with) will undertake detailed planning for any infrastructure requirements additional to
those identified in the Statewide Water Policy.
Project status
Target completion date (feasibility) Stage 2 - concept plan – December 2009
Possible completion (construction) N/A
• The terms of reference for stage 2 were approved and a consultancy request was issued on 28 October
2008. Following a competitive selection process KBR was announced as the successful tender in
February 2009. The consultancy commenced in March 2009.
Budget
Estimated cost to complete
concept plan: $3 million
Estimated Total Project Cost: Cost estimate will be developed following stage 3.
Government commitment: $3 million for investigations (Statewide Water Policy)
Budget 2009/2010: The 2009/2010 budget allocated $850 000 to the Department of
Infrastructure and Planning for the project in the 2009/2010 year.
Communications and community consultation activities
• Consultation will be undertaken with key stakeholders as part of the stage 2 investigations.

Key stakeholders need to include the communities where they are planning to take the water from. They still haven't learnt from the Traveston Crossing dam debacle!!

The 12th February is the closing date for public submissions to the draft 50 year SEQ water strategy. Here we are still seeing a high water use target of 230 L /p/day and the statement "options to make use of strategic reserve in the Mary Basin will be investigated, including an upgrade of Borumba Dam and water harvesting"

This is the same Mary River environment which Minister Garrett said was in need of further protection.”

This is totally unfair as Moreton catchment has twice as much water that falls on that catchment as what they use. It needs to catch the water more efficiently and used more wisely.

Send a clear message that more interbasin transfer from the Mary catchment is not acceptable to our community or the health of our Mary River. It is already over allocated and has low dissolved oxygen and elevated salinity levels about EPA guidelines now during low flows (July-Nov months) and particularly during dry years. The Mary Basin Water Resource Plan needs to be reworked to include the climatic shift of the last decade and environmental flows of fresh water to the sea over the barrages.

The 50-year draft SEQ Water Strategy can be downloaded at http://www.qwc.qld.gov.au/SEQWS).

Closing date for submissions to the 50 year SEQ Water Strategy is 12th Feb 2010. Everyone is encouraged to provide feedback on the 50-year SEQ Water Strategy, and water-saving targets by:
